General Questions
What is Paralegent AI and how does it work?
Paralegent AI is an AI-powered contract intelligence platform that automates contract review using your company's specific playbook. It analyzes contracts against your standards, identifies risky clauses, and generates professional redlines with explanations - all within Microsoft Word in 2-8 minutes.
The system uses 11 specialist AI agents that understand different legal domains (Commercial Terms, IP Rights, Liability, etc.) to provide expert-level analysis tailored to your organization's requirements.
How is Paralegent AI different from other contract AI tools?
Playbook-Driven: Uses YOUR company's specific rules, not generic legal guidelines
Word-Native: Works directly in Microsoft Word, not a separate platform
Specialist Agents: 11 domain experts vs. generic AI analysis
Explainable AI: Every flag shows which playbook rule triggered it
Real-Time: See analysis results as they're generated, not after completion
Who can benefit from using Paralegent AI?
Legal Departments: In-house counsel reviewing vendor contracts
Law Firms: Contract review teams handling volume work
Procurement Teams: Non-lawyers who need guidance on contract terms
Compliance Teams: Ensuring consistent application of company policies
Junior Lawyers: Learning to apply senior-level contract review standards
How long does contract analysis take?
Full contract analysis takes 2-8 minutes depending on contract complexity and length. You see real-time highlighting as the analysis runs, so you can start reviewing immediately. Redline generation takes an additional 15-20 seconds. Most contracts under 50 pages complete analysis in under 5 minutes.
What file formats does Paralegent AI support?
Contracts:
- PDF files (up to 50MB)
- Microsoft Word DOCX files (up to 50MB)
- Works best with machine-readable text (not scanned images)
Playbooks:
- PDF format (up to 50MB)
- Microsoft Word DOCX format (up to 50MB)
- No special formatting required
Does Paralegent AI replace our legal team?
No—and that's not the goal. Paralegent AI handles the 80% of contract review that matches your playbook, so your lawyers can focus on the 20% that requires judgment.
Every flag shows exactly which playbook rule triggered it—complete transparency, complete accountability. The AI does the first pass; your team makes the decisions. Think of it as a force multiplier, not a replacement.
"I don't see how it saves time if I have to reread every line anyhow."
— Common skeptic objection we hear. Our answer: You don't re-read everything. You verify the flagged 20%, not the compliant 80%.
How is Paralegent AI different from using ChatGPT for contracts?
The Problem with Generic AI:
- Uses one-size-fits-all rules, not YOUR standards
- Produces inconsistent results between sessions
- Requires copy-pasting contracts into a separate tool
- No audit trail or compliance explanations
- Confidentiality concerns with consumer AI tools
The Paralegent AI Difference:
- Uses YOUR playbook with 80-150 custom terms
- 11 specialist AI agents for expert-level analysis
- Works natively in Microsoft Word
- Every flag shows the rule that triggered it
- SOC 2 certified, enterprise-grade security
Why isn't Paralegent AI a CLM system?
Because you don't need another 6-month implementation. You don't need another $50K platform. You don't need to retrain your team on new software.
Paralegent AI works inside Microsoft Word. There's no new system to learn. No dedicated ops team required. Upload your playbook, open a contract, click Review. That's it.
If you want CLM, keep using yours. We integrate with your workflow, not replace it. We've heard too many stories of teams "reverting to paper and Excel" after failed CLM implementations. That's not going to happen with Paralegent AI.
Playbook System
What is a playbook and how do I create one?
A playbook is your company's contract review guidelines that tell the AI what to look for and how to classify risks. Simply upload your existing contract review checklist (PDF or DOCX, up to 50MB) and our AI automatically extracts 80-150 terms, organizing them into 12 legal categories.
No special formatting is required - our GPT-4.1 model with 1M token context can understand and structure any existing legal guidelines document.
How many terms does the AI extract from my playbook?
Typically 80-150 terms per playbook, depending on the comprehensiveness of your guidelines. Each term includes your preferred position, risk level classification, fallback language, and compliance rules. The AI organizes these into 12 standard legal categories like Commercial Terms, IP Rights, Liability, and Regulatory Compliance.
Can I have multiple playbooks for different contract types?
Yes, you can upload multiple playbooks for different scenarios - vendor agreements, customer contracts, NDAs, employment contracts, etc. Set any playbook as your default for quick contract reviews, and switch between playbooks as needed for specific contract types.
How long does playbook processing take?
Playbook processing typically takes 5-15 minutes depending on the length and complexity of your guidelines document. You'll see real-time status updates, and once processing is complete, the playbook is immediately available for contract analysis.
Can I edit or update my playbook after it's processed?
Currently, to update a playbook, you would upload a new version with your revised guidelines. The AI will extract the updated terms and classifications. Advanced playbook editing features are planned for future releases.
What if I don't have a formal playbook document?
Many organizations have informal guidelines or email threads with contract review standards. You can create a simple document listing your preferred terms, risk concerns, and approval requirements. Even a basic checklist can be processed into a functional playbook by our AI.
Microsoft Word Integration
Does Paralegent AI work with Microsoft Word?
Yes, Paralegent AI has native Microsoft Word integration through our add-in that works with both Word Desktop (Windows/Mac) and Word Online. You can review contracts directly in Word with real-time highlighting, comments, and suggestions without leaving your familiar environment.
The integration includes a dedicated task pane for playbook management, analysis progress tracking, and contract review controls.
What versions of Microsoft Word are supported?
Supported Platforms:
- Word for Windows (Desktop) - Windows 10+
- Word for Mac (Desktop) - macOS 10.14+
- Word Online (Web) - Modern browsers
Requirements:
- Microsoft 365 subscription
- Internet connection for analysis
- Modern browser for Word Online
How do I install the Word add-in?
After signing up for Paralegent AI, you'll receive installation instructions for the Word add-in. The installation is simple and works through Microsoft's official add-in system. Once installed, you'll see a "Paralegent AI" tab in your Word ribbon.
Can I use Paralegent AI without the Word add-in?
While the Word add-in provides the best user experience, Paralegent AI also offers REST APIs for contract analysis that can be integrated into other workflows or systems. However, the real-time highlighting and seamless document review experience requires the Word integration.
What happens to my document formatting during analysis?
Paralegent AI preserves your original document formatting completely. The analysis adds color-coded highlighting and comments to show risky clauses, but your text, fonts, headers, and layout remain unchanged. You can easily remove the highlighting if needed while keeping your contract content intact.

How is user authentication handled?
Paralegent AI uses Clerk, an enterprise-grade authentication platform, with support for email/password, Single Sign-On (SSO), Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), and social logins. JWT tokens with RS256 signatures provide secure session management with automatic refresh and circuit breaker protection.
Can other users in my organization access my contracts?
Currently, each user's data is completely isolated - only you can access your contracts and analysis results. Team collaboration features with controlled sharing and role-based access are planned for future releases. Organization administrators can manage user access but cannot see individual contract content.
